I just came across an excellent new system that can help anyone who has a personal blog or website to make extra money. How to Become a Book Promoter

In today's writing world, many new writers are becoming authors overnight. Some are self-publishing and creating ebooks, as well as getting lucky and having their books published through a publisher. At the end of the road, however, the important step of promoting the book begins.

As someone who has worked part-time for a publisher before as a book promotions assistant, I know the importance of helping authors meet their marketing goals. Even with a lot of hard work, any writer will tell you that sometimes the sales don't come in like you wish they would. This is because marketing isn't a one-time thing. Putting the message out there has to be a consistent goal for any and all writer promoting their work.

I have helped writers promote their books through a variety of services. Each of the services has to be targeted to the audience you want to reach, but a general list of marketing goals I've accomplished have included one or more of the following:

• Creating a blog/website for the book
• Registering the blog with directories and submitting to search engines
• Interviewing the author for Associated Content
• Writing a press release
• Sending a press release to a large list of bookstores on and offline
• Listing press release on free press release sites
• Sending press release to newspapers (A large national list in the U.S. and Canada)
• Sending a suggestion to the Oprah Winfree show about the book/author
• Sending a note to book reviewers with link to blog (with option to send PDF of the book)
• Placing free ads about the book on Craigslist and other sites that allow free advertising

These are just a few of the items an author should consider. From there, he or she needs to consider a book tour, sending out postcards and doing other targeted marketing.

Becoming a Book Promoter

If you want to become a book promoter and marketer, I suggest creating a system that includes any of the above services, and coming up with a set price for your package. An author can choose from all your services or from a select few. Charge accordingly.

Book Promoter: How much to charge for your marketing efforts

This will depend on your time and what you believe it's worth. When I first started out, I only charged authors $250 to put up a three-page website. To perform the above services, I charge a $500 flat fee. You can charge more or less, depending on what works best for you and your client(s).

Book Promoter: Where to Promote your Services

As a new book promoter, you can promote your services to forums, newsgroups, blog sites, new author sites and publishing companies on and offline. You might also consider an ad in a local paper and the free ad sites online.

Consider putting up a blog specifically listing your services and begin promoting your blog to these places. Put up fliers in universities, libraries and send them to writers clubs, English departments of colleges and etc.

Book promoting and marketing is a fascinating and satisfying job. Though you can do the above work in just a couple of weeks (more or less), I would encourage you to have a follow-up plan to sell your authors. They need to realize, after all, that one initial effort barely gets the attention they need. To really be successful, any advertising agency will tell you that the message has to be repeated over and over. It's the same for selling and promoting new books to the world.

How Freelancers Survive

For those of us who freelance, whether for a living or part-time, we know the need for planning and executing our plans on a time schedule. I find that being self-motivated is the only way any freelance writer survives.

Over the years, I've incorporated a variety of services and products into my freelance business. It's not until recently that I find myself doing mostly writing. You see, because of new programs and technology, everyone out there seems to be doing their own websites, brochures, newsletters and etc. In other words, instead of calling in the "pro's," they are saving money and doing it themselves. Whether the end product is any good or not, doesn't seem to matter to some. Saving money on the bottomline seems to be the name of the game in small business.

Still, despite the fact that everyone is now a graphic artist, web designer, and content producer, freelance writers and editors are still needed. Yes, people still try to write and design their own brochures, articles and newsletters, but upon closer examination, an educated writer can pinpoint the areas of weakness and correct them. Same goes for marketing experts...we can look at a promotional piece and know what's wrong with it.

So, as the times change, writers and marketing people need to apply their muscle in being more like consultants rather than originators. Since everyone thinks themselves "creators," freelance writers and marketing people need to sell themselves as consultants and editors who take what's already created and make it better. From there, some businesses will realize it's better to start over than to try to improve a mediocre piece.

If you are flexible and knowledgable in providing a variety of services, I suggest you advertise it to your potential clients. Below is a list from my website of services I provide. This includes services that I may hire out to my network of freelance people. Still, businesses can just come to one place and get it all. BREAKING INTO COPYWRITING AND OTHER FREELANCE WRITING OPPORTUNITIES

Some of you are asking, how can I break into the field of copywriting and gaining freelance writing opportunities? Here are some tips to consider:

Place a classified or display ad in local business newspaper(s). I've been running one for years for only $21 a month. It has generated thousands of dollars in business for me. It's virtually the only advertising I do. I ran an ad in the yellow pages one year and only received one call. That was an expensive mistake. Since I work PT for an organization (20-25 hours a week), I don't need or want more work than I currently have.
Have some business cards printed. You can get 250 beautiful 4-colored business cards printed for free (except shipping and handling) from VistaPrint online. Mine has my name and the title of Freelance Consultant, address, phone number and my website. I've given myself many titles in the past: President, Freelance Writer, Marketing Consultant, and settled for Freelance Consultant.
Create your personalized letterhead for invoices, sales letters and other correspondence.
One year I sent out postcards to a specific target audience. This included travel agents mostly, since that was my interest at the time. This was before web pages were hot, so I was soliciting for writing brochure and newsletter copy. When web pages came on the scene, I learned how to design them, and sent out postcards again, but this time to a more general audience.
Study ads, brochure copy, newsletter copy, flyers and direct mail pieces you receive. Keep a file folder entitled IDEAS for future reference.
Create a newsletter. One year I sent out a newsletter called Possibilities Unlimited to my clientsThis didn't really generate any additional clients. It served as a goodwill piece...good PR.
Have a personal website. Mine includes samples of my work. This saves me and the client time. I'm rarely asked for a resume and people take my word that I know what I'm doing. Sometimes I carry a portfolio with me, but usually it isn't necessary.
Keep three writing samples available to email or give to clients that ask.

This is basically all I've done, but if I were to go full-time at it, I'd be much more assertive. Always remember that it takes approximately eight ads to really get someone's full attention. This can be expensive, but you can't expect to get a response from just running one ad. Be committed to a budget plan. Other things I've done over the years include:
Hook up with printers, artists, and photographers. Let them know you're a writer and that you'd appreciate working with them on future projects.
Get with ad agencies in town and let them know you're there to help with their "overflow" projects. Some agencies use freelancers exclusively, while others have their own copywriting staff. Sometimes there are overflows.
If you have a special talent or interest (martial arts, travel, cooking, insurance) be sure to target into that market to promote your copywriting services.

Copywriting is fun. It gives you the opportunity to write for many markets. You become a Jack-of-all-trades and a master of one or two.

If you're like me and enjoy the challenge of earning your way through creative endeavors, whether it's on this network, or other networks on the web, here are some tips to help you make more.

Plan of Action
People with ideas can't make any money unless they take their ideas to the street. Wealth can only be the product of man's capacity to think, if the thinker is truly a doer. A real thinker is someone who conceives of a creative idea and then begins the process of initiating that idea into a reality. He has a plan of action. That plan goes from A to B to C and so forth.

A Target Market
A thinker has a market. With every good idea, one has to consider who will benefit from that idea? Who is your target market and how will you reach them? As you think of your market, you must design your product or service with benefits that will earn you profits, while fulfilling a need in for your market.

Resources
Where is the money coming from to support your plan of action? Can you get a grant, a loan, or do you have the funds to create your enterprise? What about manpower? Who will take care of the day-to-day nitty gritty work? Know your resources and plan for small disasters.

Time Management
Let's face it, some of us have a lot of ideas, but little time to implement them. We're all alloted the same amount of time each day, yet some people utilize it to their advantage, making tons of money along the way. Others are very intelligent and gifted, yet struggle in their ability to manage time.

So, you ask, how can I make $100 an hour? Do you think only lawyers and doctors make that kind of money? No, I knew a freelance writer who charged $100 an hour. She was very good at what she did and provided a very specific type of writing for a very targeted market. She only signed up clients who agreed to pay a minimum of $4,000 a month for her services! Not only that, but she was sought out in the industry for her skills.

The key to making more money per hour, as a freelancer, is to become an expert in something very specific, but to not close yourself off to other opportunities. The more you work in the industry, the greater your experience and expertise will be. As you gain new clients, referrals will come. Soon you will be able to do your work in half the time by following a successful formula. This will increase your hourly pay. Some days I make $200 an hour, some days I make only $15. The difference? Time invested in creating, designing, writing and thinking. One of my goals? To think and grow rich....yes, Napolean Hill had the right idea!

A Sure Way to Sell Everything You Write

The other day I picked up two different magazines that contained work by the same author, but rewritten. One of the articles by the author concentrated on the history of the topic at hand, while the other focused on more present day realities related to the topic. I didn't realize it was the same author until I got home and read the articles.

I couldn't help but think to myself, "Wow, this guy is an opportunist, for sure." I wondered to myself if either of the magazine editors had any idea that their rival was running a very similar article in their journal that same month?

Is it possible to sell everything we write? I believe with hard work and studying the markets, it IS possible and should be every writer's goal in the marketplace. Okay, I'm not talking about blogs about bloggers, nor about musings that make little sense. I'm talking about selling everything a writer writes that has a beginning, middle and end. I'm talking about developing ideas into articles that make sense; that share a definite idea, and one that may call for a change in a person's life.

To sell everything you write, consider taking these steps:

1. Begin your research. Read lots of publications.
2. Study the markets.
3. Provide a new angle to an old story.
4. When writing one story, consider writing a companion piece.
5. Sell the editor on two or three ideas surrounding one topic.
6. If you're not sure what to write about, consider the topics you've covered in a blog. Develop on one blog idea per article.
7. If your article is rejected by one magazine, send it out again. Before giving up or rewriting it, send it out 10 times (or even 22 times! Consider the book "Catch 22." The author finally got his work accepted after the 22nd time!)
8. Plan on selling everything you write. When you start writing a blog, an article, or develop an idea, seriously consider what audience would be interested in your topic.
9. Get your name out to editors. Create a resume and a package of some of your published writings. If you've never been published, prepare some of your best writings to share.
10. If you're not sure what sells, scope out the internet for ideas. Read and talk with other writers.

Once you've begun selling everything you write, the next step is writing about everything you sell. These sorts of articles are very popular in writing magazines and online journals. Share your experiences. Personal experiences, if written properly, can be of big interest to other writers.

Finally, don't be afraid to capitalize on your experience and talent. If writing is your passion, don't think that because you're able to sell what you've written that "you've sold out!" Selling your work means that you've been able to catch the attention of an audience and writing staff that believe in your ability to provide important information in a very interesting and entertaining manner.

Creating The Perfect Writer's Portfolio

A good portfolio is important for all creative people to have on hand. When you contact a potential employer for a creative job, you will most likely be asked to bring your portfolio.

Many years ago I carried a black notebook that held many of my “finest” works. In time, I upgraded to a larger artist-sized portfolio. The portfolio houses my larger brochures & newsletters and also allows me to carry drawings and print jobs of my associates. When I go out on freelance interviews today, I am able to sell a whole creative package including writing, design, photography and printing. Having a one-stop shop provides convenience to my clients. They appreciate not having to call a dozen people, but rather one project manager or consultant who will make sure all their needs are met.

For convenience, I also provide an online portfolio that includes brochures, newsletters and websites I’ve worked on. I also post a list of services I can provide. The more information you can give them up front, the quicker you can get started on their projects.

If you’re strictly a writer, and do not care to provide other creative services, it’s still a good idea to keep a portfolio of writing samples on hands. Most places will ask you to send them three or four of your best articles. If you have a website, and they don’t mind doing a little surfing, provide them with a link to your writing samples.

The key to it all is accessibility. You want to make it as easy as possible for your potential clients or employers to get the information they need in a timely manner. Another thing to consider are individual folders which house samples of your work, a resume, references and a cover letter. When someone asks you to send a package, all you have to do is slip it in an envelope and send it on.

Studying these markets will prepare the writer for new opportunities in both fiction and nonfiction; news, features, politics, entertainment and of course, travel destinations.

Put yourself in the traveler's seat and ask yourself what you'd like to read while on an airplane. Consider new angles and stories of interest with a different or more interesting twist. Contact the magazine for a sample and study it well. Consider new trends and breaking news stories. Also, consider photos and art that might compliment your story. Query the editor with your ideas. Even if you're rejected the first time around, keep trying. Just like all magazines, eventually you're bound to make a connection and a sale.

The Internet is a breeding ground for new authors, and as a result, new writing communities are forming all the time to fill the needs of this new market. For serious writers, these online writing communities and websites can serve to provide needed direction and input. New writers find many such sites to be helpful in gaining objective critiques on their fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.

Years ago, I started my own writing group. It wasn't online, but there were about six of us. We'd meet once a week and critique one another's works. I also belonged to a bigger group that did the same thing. At the time, I tried my hand at fiction. I had no idea how embarrassing it would be to read my fiction out loud!

Maybe you're too busy to get together with people every week, and would feel more comfortable with the new type of writing and critique groups online. I've often heard new writers say they wish they could break into the freelance writing world. It seems pretty tough at times to just have someone give you an opportunity when you have no experience. The great thing about today's online market is that you can sell yourself easier. With a few writing samples, a well-constructed resume and bio, you can open doors. Sometimes all that's needed is a submission, and no one even asks for experience.

I'm one of those people who have hired freelancers based on their abilities and skills, more than their education and experience. That is, if they can prove themselves to me with great samples and enthusiasm, I'm more likely to network with them than I am with a know-it-all well-educated editor with a bad attitude. I'm not the only one like this. I have networked with many companies and businesses that feel the same way. A track record and results are important, but fresh talent with high energy and ambition should never be overlooked.

When I first started out, several companies gave me a chance. I looked good on a resume, but I pretty much had no experience. Luckily my internship writing for the travel industry gave me some credibility, as well as the samples I managed to put together from relevant college class projects. My goal was to show that I was highly motivated, creative, and had the ability to work independently. I sought projects that allowed me to work by myself, for the most part. Guess what? I managed. Through my early years, I landed some really great freelance projects. I remember designing a seminar catalog for a new company; writing radio and print ads; even doing radio voice-overs. I then got a reporting job PT for a newspaper and went on to write for magazines and many other businesses.

I've always enjoyed the variety freelancing has offered. I especially believe in helping new writers, as well as established writers find their niche in the freelance world. Ten Marketing Tips for Selling Your Book

As I promised in my previous post, here is a segment from my by Ebook, "Practical Writing and Marketing Tips for Freelancers."

Marketing plans need to be personalized for each book and each author, but here are some general ideas to consider:

1. Writing down a list of 10 to 15 potential target markets.
2. Prepare a press release about your book to send to reviewers at newspapers, magazines, TV and radio. Even if you don't get the book reviewed, if it gets mentioned in your local Sunday Arts section of the paper, that's something. Be sure to include ordering information.
3. Assuming you've published the book correctly, you have an ISBN number. This number allows your book to be "in the system" when people are searching for it via an Internet search or through a bookstore. Send your book to Amazon.com and other online bookstores. Keep in mind you won't make much money selling in these places, but having it available via that avenue is important.
4. Take a good look at the 10 to 15 potential target markets you selected. Now, ask yourself how can I best reach this audience? Here are some ideas:

Getting an ad or free mention (via sending press release) to their monthly newsletter editor
Sending a 4-color postcard with the book on one side and description and ordering info on the other
Via an online direct email campaign. Be sure to create personalized letters so it doesn't appear like SPAM
Placing an ad at the back of a magazine, newspaper of the organizations on the list, advertising your new book
Contacting these organizations to find out if you can talk to their groups and promote your book
Prepare a special seminar on topics related to your book and the organization's needs
Sending a marketing packet to each one on your contact target market list and following up with them later
Getting on an E-zine group list

5. Create a web page. Websites are important, but should be considered a marketing supplement to whatever you're already doing. Get registered with search engines and make sure whoever is designing your website creates the proper "meta codes" so that keywords will pop up during searches. Don't expect your website to be the first listed on a search engine. People pay thousands of dollars to make such a thing happen.
6. Begin networking in the community and at local bookstores. Get to meet the bookstore owners and plan to have book readings. Do book tours across the country, if you're able.
7. Consider having your book included in a direct mail coupon book.
8. Set up seminars in local universities, libraries, schools and organizations.
9. Have a book party at your home. Invite friends, family, neighbors, church groups, editors, reviewers and etc.10. Prepare a press kit. In it you'll have a photo of you, the book, a fact sheet, a press release, any published articles about the book, recommendations and testimonies from people who have read the book and etc. This can be used to send out to the press as well as to have on hand when you meet with important people.
